This service is responsible for providing counseling to physicians and to patients with regards to cancer risk related to familial and genetic susceptibility. The service can be approached through referrals by health care givers or by direct contact (Tel: 04-8250460, Fax: 04:8344358, e-mail: mishpachty@clalit.org.il). The Service also provides counseling to individuals or families in whom gene mutations were detected in the various research projects conducted by the NICCC.

It is open for counseling to high risk families from Israel or from outside of Israel, and specializer especially in familial cancer in Jewish families.

More than 3,000 families have already been evaluated by the Service, most of them with family history of breast cancer, many with family history of colorectal cancer and some with a variety of other tumors in the family. Of these, more than 500 families have already been diagnosed with mutations in the BRCA genes corresponding with the breast-ovary cancer syndrome, and dozens of families were diagnosed with mutations in the APC gene or with microsatellite instability with or without identified mutations in the corresponding genes (MLH1, MSH2 and other) corresponding with the HNPCC (Hereditary non-polyposis Colorectal Cancer) or Lynch syndrome.

Due to the community-based nature of the service it is heavily involved in out-reach to as many family members as possible, both in Israel and abroad, and has a mean rate of 3 tested individuals per evaluated family. The Service provides the genetic testing as well as counseling for primary and secondary prevention, pre-surgical advice and coordinates clinical follow-up.

People with more than one case of breast or ovarian cancer in their family or with several cases of colon and/or Uterus/Ovary and/or Kidney/Urinary bladder cancers in the family and especially if detected at young ages (50 and under) are encouraged to contact us for consultation.
